Christmas Cheer!

Christmas Cheer!

Christmas is almost here and the home decor has started going up! How great it is to see everyone celebrate Jesus’ birth!

For the mantel, I took an old wreath and removed all the red trimmings to give it a more updated “all green” look. The only new purchase I made was the “Noel” accent. I love The First Noel Christmas song and wanted to incorporate it somewhere. The chocolate cone trees were purchased at last year’s Christmas clearance sale and I just love the color!

Warm Inviting Christmas Mantel

Warm Inviting Christmas FireplaceI had been searching for a sleigh for several months but, being a frugal person, couldn’t see myself spending $90+ for a sleigh. One day I found this cute sleigh at HomeGoods for less than half the price! I liked that it was in a neutral color (with no reds) and the size was not too big. I decorated it with garland and topped with gift boxes. I then found the cute little deer at Marshalls.

My buffet was decorated in neutrals:

We haven’t put up a Christmas tree in my home in the past 10 years but this year we did a “Jesse Tree”, a tree that tells the story of God’s salvation through the coming of the Messiah.
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD–
3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
Isaiah 11:1-4

DIY Scarecrow Costume

Need an easy, modest costume idea? For a total price of $3.56 I made this cute scarecrow costume. I had the flannel shirt, boots and floppy hat so just purchased a roll of raffia ribbon at Michaels with their 40% off coupon.  I used the ribbon to make the wristbands, hair pieces and as stuffing. I chose a ripped pair of jeans so I could have some of the stuffing come out of the holes. The makeup was easy and a simple online search pulled up lots of cute ideas.

Scarecrow Wristband

To make the wristbands, I used a hair tie and cut twelve 18″ pieces of raffia. I folded each piece in half and used the slip-knot tie method shown below:

For the hair pieces, I used the same method but attached to bobby pins. And there you have it, an easy last-minute costume that will get you lots of compliments 🙂

Christmas Time in Texas

This weekend Southeast Texas got a cold front and we were blessed with 40 degree weather. We don’t get much cold here, so the cold weather was much welcomed. Normally, I like to take one holiday at a time. Thanksgiving is not here yet but the weather and my radio station  playing Christmas music got me in the mood so I decided to bring out the decorations. I went with an emerald theme this year.

Happy Halloween

This pumpkin project was so easy and fun for the kids. The kids painted the pumpkins with acrylic paint. I sketched the design with chalk and they attached the push-pins.

I baked a lot of cookies (homemade cat-shaped sugar cookies recipe here, monster eye cookies recipe here, and a cookie cake recipe here that was a big hit). I made a few changes to the cookie cake recipe. I followed the advice in some of the comments and added less salt, more vanilla, used wax paper to roll it flat in the pizza pan and left an inch gap. I also added m&ms as well as chocolate chips.

More fun decorating. The boys really liked the plates, draped furniture and crooked frames.
